“Every day is January 6 now”, now

“Every Day is January 6 Now – New York Times, January 1, 2022

On October 25, 2023, also known as January 6, Andree McCarthy tweeted this:

“This unabashed, virulent antisemitism is unacceptable in the United States. DOJ and FBI must start J6-style scorched earth probe, get all the video, and aggressively prosecute blatant civil rights crimes. Not enough to express regret. Indict.”

Andrew’s bio:

Andrew C. McCarthy III is an American lawyer and columnist for National Review. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. A Republican, he led the 1995 terrorism prosecution against Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and eleven others.

Lets look at it in segments and in its whole

“This unabashed, virulent antisemitism is unacceptable in the United States.”

  • On October 7, 2023, Israel was attacked by Hamas terrorists.
  • McCarthy’s tweet was from October 25: he doesn’t say Hamas, nor terrorist, nor Israel.

He’s not talking about ‘that, over there’, rather he dislocates ‘that’ trauma, places it nearby and makes himself, and the society he inhabits, its victim.

He says ‘unabashed, virulent anti-Semitism’, yet for something that is unabashed, McCarthy is awfully shy to disclose the crime or its culprits.

Whatever is happening, it’s virulent. This means that its  spreading.

And what is this thing that McCarthy denounces with so much fervor, it’s anti-Semitism. An abstract, lazy term. How and where did McCarthy see this anti-Semitism express itself?  Jimmy Carter confessed to ‘lusting in his heart’, this is not a criminal offense no matter how lewd his fantasies. If 1000 people unabashedly, virulently lust in their heart, its still not a crime, this leads to McCarthy’s next sentence…

“DOJ and FBI must start J6-style scorched earth probe…”

McCarthy is summoning the Department of Justice and the FBI, weighty, problematic institutions, that, not coincidentally, McCarthy has an intimate relationship with.

What crimes does McCarthy believe involves the FBI and DoJ?

McCarthy’s instructions are to deploy an all hands on deck, resource intensive investigation January 6 scorched earth probe.

A probe?

Hold on, with barely a pause, McCarthy’s gone from “unabashed, virulent antisemitism” to demanding a expedition in pursuit of the discovery of unabashed, virulent, antisemitism.

He wants a “scorched earth probe”.

Scorched-earth, adjective (from Merriam Webster)

  1. Relating to or being a military policy involving deliberate and usually widespread destruction of property and resources so that an invading enemy cannot use them.
  2. Directed toward victory or supremacy at all costs.

He’s asking for our own ‘earth’, that is the United States, to be scorched. He wants the sacrifice of our citizens rights and privileges to achieve some expediency, presumably in the service of an urgent societal need to restore tranquility and laws.

Not only does he demand scorched earth, but he even characterizes the ideological participants, McCarthy says January 6 scorched earth probe”.

January 6th is a battering ram of tactics, legal cases and outcomes that was utilized explicitly to be ‘unfair’. It was, and continues to be imposed by a regime that is perceived by tens of millions of Americans to be illegitimate and has used utmost brute force to assert itself and seize dissent. Jan6 is the regime ‘scorching the earth’.

“…get all the video, and aggressively prosecute blatant civil rights crimes.”

McCarthy says “get all the video“, but doesn’t tell us videos of what.

It can be ruled out that this is a case of posters of Israeli hostages being torn down from United States fixtures, such a thing may be distasteful, but it’s not a crime and not, in itself anti-Semitic, even though the person who is doing it may be anti-Semitic. Is this the probe that McCarthy wants engaged?

Get all the videos is a reference to January 6th, his statement cannot be viewed in isolation from the preceding words and their sentiments.

What is the “blatant civil rights case“? If its blatant

All of the firepower he wants mustered, but against who and for what?

  • He is not saying people who rip down posters of Israelis held captive, clearly he doesn’t mean them, or else he would say it.
  • Further, putting up signs is in violation of most municipalities sanitation regulations, the people putting up the posters could be charged.
  • He doesn’t mean people who are declaring their sympathies with Hamas, he would say that.

“Not enough to express regret. Indict.”

Here he stays within a motif of the fetishization of January 6, connecting the actors of that event to this new one he is reporting on, and using repetition with intensifiers for rhetorical effect. These people, whoever they are, are as yet unindicted co-conspirators and they should be interrogated under a pretense of an anti-Semitic inquiry.

Beware smart people sounding stupid

Here we have to probe as to the pragmatic ambiguities that he has bolted onto his words, his implications, how he directs the reader in the context of his outrage, the offense and the Israel-Hamas war that he has pilfered from so as to claim its moral warehouse for his own ambitions.

We don’t have the abundant resources of the government to subpoena McCarthy’s bank, phone, internet, email records so I wont hazard to guess where a probe might lead us.
